Summer view of High Street
Winter view

The railings down both sides of the pavements are the original ones as shown in the photo below. Most other metal railings were removed during the 2nd world war.

VIEW OF THE HOUSES ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF HIGH STREET IN THE LATE 1860'S

  • There was a fire in 1873 that started at Tucker's bakehouse with the colonnaded porch and spread up the hill to Peter Street. All the houses were thatched at that time so the fire quickly spread. Traces of the original buildings can be seen at the lower end of Back Street.
  • The Inn sign of the Queen's Head public house can be seen half way up the hill. After it was rebuilt after the fire it was renamed the Butcher's Arms.
  • The Olde White Lion which escaped the fire, had a thatched roof in those days as well.

  • All these buildings are new and the thatch roofs was replaced by slate.
  • The shop blind protects the combined Post Office and Bakery.
  • The gentleman with the dog is Mr. William Baker, headmaster of Bradninch School.

  • The street was much narrower then with a water ditch on each side of the street.
  • The railings to the left are no longer there.
  • Not a car in sight.

The lady on the doorway is Sallie Morgan. The top of the cellars can be seen on the pavement. The cellars are the reason for the building being known as the 'Vaults'.

16 & 18 High Street, 8th June 1937

The Bakery is to the left. If you look carefully you might be able to make out the Hovis sign between the 2 upstairs windows. The shop is now Cameo Hairstylists.

At the time of this photo was taken you entered the Post Office through the Bakery Shop.
